Cepheid Says FDA Cleared Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever Panel for Four Viruses

The Danaher company says the PCR test gives results in about 61 minutes on GeneXpert Dx systems; an FDA clearance in August covered a version limited to Defense Department laboratories.

The FDA cleared this device through the 510(k) pathway, which finds it substantially equivalent to a device already on the market. Clearance is not the same as approval.

Key points

  • Cepheid said on November 3 that the FDA has cleared its Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever Panel, a multiplex PCR test.
  • The company says the test detects Ebola, Marburg, Lassa and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever viruses in approximately 61 minutes on GeneXpert Dx systems.
  • An August 2026 FDA clearance of the Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever test on the Edge X system was for use only by US Department of Defense laboratories; the new release does not give a 510(k) number.

Cepheid, a Danaher operating company, said on Tuesday that the US Food and Drug Administration has cleared its Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever Panel, a multiplex PCR test designed to detect several viruses that cause viral hemorrhagic fevers from a single sample.

According to the company's release, the test detects and identifies nucleic acids of Ebola virus (including Zaire, Sudan, Taï Forest and Bundibugyo, not differentiated), Marburg virus, Lassa virus and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus.

Cepheid said the panel delivers results in approximately 61 minutes on its GeneXpert Dx systems. The company said the closed-cartridge design minimizes the risk of cross-contamination between samples and that sample processing includes viral inactivation.

How this relates to earlier clearances

The test has an earlier FDA history. An FDA letter dated August 7, 2026, cleared the Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever test, number K261362, performed on the GeneXpert Edge X system, with a previous version, K253653, as its predicate. The indications in that clearance state the test "is for use only by United States Department of Defense laboratories" with appropriate protective equipment and trained personnel. The letter records the FDA's finding of substantial equivalence under the 510(k) process.

The FDA's openFDA 510(k) data, last updated October 26, lists those two Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever clearances, with decision dates of February 20 and August 7, 2026, and no later one. The openFDA data does not show the clearance Cepheid announced on Tuesday.

Cepheid's release does not give a 510(k) number or a decision date, and it does not say what indications or user restrictions apply to the newly cleared panel. It does name a different instrument family, GeneXpert Dx, from the Edge X system in the August letter.

What the company said

"Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever Panel gives healthcare professionals a rapid molecular result across several high-consequence viruses from a single sample," Connie Savor, Cepheid's chief medical officer, said in the release. She said the clearance advances the company's commitment to making critical diagnostics accessible.

The company said early symptoms of these infections are often non-specific and difficult to distinguish from other febrile illnesses, and that rapid detection can support patient isolation, infection prevention measures and public health notification.

Outbreak backdrop

The clearance comes during an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus. Cepheid's release, citing an Associated Press report, said the disease continues to spread geographically in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Nigeria, with 10,351 confirmed cases and 5,026 deaths reported as of October 31.

Cepheid said it received a World Health Organization Emergency Use Listing for the test in September 2026, which it said allowed it to expand work with public health partners, laboratories and healthcare providers in response to the outbreak. The company said the FDA clearance further expands the role of the GeneXpert platform in preparedness and response to emerging infectious disease threats.

The release carries the notice that the test is an in vitro diagnostic medical device and is not available in all countries.
