Samsung Starts US Rollout of FDA-Cleared Sleep Apnea Feature on Galaxy Ring
The upgraded software, cleared through a 510(k) in July, estimates breathing disruptions per hour of sleep; Samsung describes the ring version as a first for an over-the-counter smart ring.

The FDA cleared this device through the 510(k) pathway, which finds it substantially equivalent to a device already on the market. Clearance is not the same as approval.
Key points
- FDA records list Sleep Apnea Feature (v2.0) as K261011, found substantially equivalent on July 20, 2026.
- The update is reaching the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch 9 in the US, with Galaxy Watch 7 and 8 models to follow, according to trade reports of Samsung's announcement.
- The feature uses two nights of data within a 10-day period and is intended for adults 18 and older.
Samsung has begun rolling out an upgraded version of its Sleep Apnea feature in the United States, extending the FDA-cleared software from its watches to the Galaxy Ring. HIT Consultant reported on Tuesday that Samsung Electronics America announced the feature's availability on the ring and compatible Galaxy Watch devices.
What the FDA record shows
FDA 510(k) data lists "Sleep Apnea Feature (v2.0)" from Samsung Electronics as K261011, received on March 26, 2026, with a decision of substantially equivalent on July 20, 2026. The record classifies the product as an over-the-counter device to assess risk of sleep apnea.
The same data lists the original Sleep Apnea Feature under DEN230041, a De Novo decision dated February 6, 2024. Trade coverage this week has used the words clearance and approval interchangeably; the FDA record shows a 510(k) clearance.
The FDA data does not itself name the Galaxy Ring. The link between the clearance and the ring comes from Samsung's statements as reported by trade outlets.
How the feature works
According to HIT Consultant, the updated feature moves from basic risk categories to calculating an estimated number of breathing disruptions detected per hour of sleep. The outlet said the algorithm analyzes blood oxygen saturation, pulse waveforms and accelerometer movement signals during sleep, and that it requires two nights of valid data within a 10-day window. It runs through the Samsung Health Monitor app.
Droid Life, citing Samsung, said the feature is intended for users over the age of 18. Android Authority said the feature looks for signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and categorizes the severity of disruptions, so that users can take the data to a physician.
The reports differ slightly on the first wave. HIT Consultant named the Galaxy Watch 9, running Wear OS 7.0 or higher, and the Galaxy Ring. Android Authority also listed the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and said the rollout covers the US and South Korea. Both said Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 models would follow through later updates.
The reports also cite a regulatory decision by South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety alongside the FDA's.
Samsung's claim
Samsung describes the ring version as a first. "This approval from Korea's MFDS, along with our introduction of the world's first FDA cleared over-the-counter smart ring, reflects our commitment to accessible innovation," Jongmin Choi, head of the Health R&D Group in Samsung's Mobile eXperience business, said, as quoted by HIT Consultant. Android Authority said the Galaxy Ring is the first commercial smart ring with regulatory clearance for sleep apnea tracking.
Samsung's own newsroom release could not be read for this article, so details of the announcement are attributed to the outlets above.
