Key points

  • Boston Scientific plans to build a 500,000-square-foot medical device distribution facility at Plainfield Innovation Park in Indiana, the state announced on June 3.
  • The company anticipates investing about $138 million to construct and equip the site, which is expected to create up to 300 jobs; groundbreaking is planned for later in 2026.
  • Once complete, the facility is to be responsible for global distribution of Boston Scientific's medical devices and will include light manufacturing and regulatory compliance operations.

Boston Scientific will build a medical device distribution facility in Plainfield, Indiana, that is expected to create up to 300 jobs, Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced on June 3 in a release from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

According to the release, the company anticipates investing approximately $138 million to construct and equip a 500,000-square-foot facility at Plainfield Innovation Park. The figure is the company's planned capital investment, not a completed expenditure. Boston Scientific expects to break ground later this year.

A global distribution role

The state's release said the site is meant to support and enhance Boston Scientific's US-based distribution and logistics operations. Once complete, it will be responsible for global distribution of the company's medical devices. The facility will feature light manufacturing and incorporate the processes and operations needed for regulatory compliance, the release said.

Plainfield is a town just outside Indianapolis. Local broadcaster WRTV reported that the center will support the company's US distribution and logistics with advanced technology, light manufacturing and regulatory compliance processes, and that it will manage worldwide distribution of Boston Scientific's devices once complete.

State officials tie it to a life sciences push

"This new facility can bolster the state's global leadership in life sciences and medical device innovation while creating hundreds of high-skilled, high-wage jobs, providing more opportunities for Hoosiers to advance their skills, grow their careers and provide for their families," Braun said in the release.

The state presented the project as part of the governor's life sciences initiative, a commitment announced in March to invest $1 billion over 10 years in agricultural and life sciences with a goal of creating 100,000 high-wage jobs. It also linked the project to the BioHeartland, the state's effort to grow its life sciences industry.

Robin Brandgard, president of the Plainfield Town Council, said in the release that the investment "may be transformational not only for Plainfield, but also for the future of the BioHeartland." He said the project validated the town's plans for an innovation corridor south of Interstate 70, where advanced logistics, manufacturing and life sciences operations could grow together.

What comes next

Neither the state nor the company gave a completion date for the facility. The release said the up-to-300 jobs would be high-wage positions and that the company's products help treat more than 48 million patients a year, a figure attributed to Boston Scientific. Construction is set to begin once the company breaks ground later in 2026.
