Amazon One Medical Rolls Out Agentic Health AI Assistant to All Members

The assistant draws on members' records, labs and medications to answer questions, book visits and renew prescriptions, and hands off to clinicians when it judges human care is needed, Amazon said.

Key points

  • Amazon One Medical made its Health AI assistant available to all members in the One Medical app on January 21, after a beta with select members since early 2025.
  • Amazon says the assistant explains lab results, books appointments and renews medications using each member's medical records, and that conversations are not automatically added to the medical record.
  • The launch followed OpenAI's and Anthropic's health products earlier in January, pharmaphorum reported.

Amazon One Medical on January 21 launched Health AI, an agentic artificial intelligence assistant in the One Medical app that answers health questions, books appointments and helps manage medications using each member's medical history, according to Amazon's announcement.

The assistant is now live for all One Medical members, the company said. A version had been available to select members in beta since early 2025. It runs on models hosted on Amazon Bedrock.

What the assistant does

Amazon said Health AI draws on members' medical records, lab results, vaccinations and current medications, so members do not have to upload information manually from other providers. The company lists four functions: answering health questions, including explaining lab results; giving round-the-clock guidance on symptoms, conditions, potential treatments and wellness; helping members choose between a virtual visit, an in-person appointment or urgent care; and handling tasks such as booking appointments with a One Medical provider or renewing prescriptions, which members can choose to fill through Amazon Pharmacy.

The assistant was co-developed with One Medical's clinical leadership, which embedded patient safety guardrails and clinical protocols, including for emergencies and sensitive situations, the company said. When symptoms or clinical criteria call for human judgment, Health AI recommends a level of care and can connect members to their care team by message, video call or in-person appointment.

“The U.S. health care experience is fragmented, with each provider seeing only parts of your health puzzle,” said Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, in the announcement.

Andrew Diamond, One Medical's chief medical officer, said the patient-clinician relationship “remains crucially important and irreplaceable,” and that the assistant is meant to help members understand their health information and manage routine tasks.

Privacy and access

Amazon said the assistant follows the same Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant privacy and security practices as the rest of Amazon Health Services, that conversations with it are not automatically added to a member's medical record, and that Amazon does not sell members' personal data. Members who do not want to use it can switch to the standard app experience.

One Medical membership can be added as a Prime benefit for $9 a month or $99 a year, according to the company's published prices.

Amazon is the latest technology company to offer an AI assistant built on users' medical records, pharmaphorum reported, following OpenAI's ChatGPT Health and Anthropic's Claude for Healthcare earlier in January. All three companies have said their assistants are not intended to diagnose or treat, and have stressed HIPAA safeguards, the publication reported. Amazon acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2023, according to pharmaphorum.
